Education of China: Art and culture is very diffrent from Lao Lao's time to Moying's time. Lao Lao is one of the few lucky women in China because her father Zu Ye wanted her to be educated more than most women. Moying Li said, “My Lao Lao could read and write” (23), which was something most elderly women could not do. Zu Ye wanted Lao Lao to be more successful than the rest of the Chinese women. Zu Ye taught himself to read and play instruments, and he wants his daughter to be like him and play instruments like he did. The Chinese government recruited educated citizens to help teach others to read. Moying said, “For the first time in her life, Lao Lao felt respected, her education had become an asset at last” (40).
Over the years education changes alot and Moying is getting a better education than most people that would have been in Lao Lao's time. Moying Li’s education is much different than Lao Lao. Moying said, “I had been among some one hundred children selected to attend the Foreign Language School” (42). Moying Li’s school was a very ordered boarding school. When Moying was in school revolts occured on school property because people thought that the teachers were focused on capitalism. Classes becoming more and more irregular as teachers did not feel safe coming to school.

Music:One big part of the Chinese culture is the music. In the novel, Peng plays a bamboo flute. "From the flute came a sweet, sad melody, "Liangzhu"-a popular tune with lyrics based on a story similar to Romeo and Juliet-written some seven hundred years before Shakespeare made his own hero and heroine timeless" (97).

Entertainment of China:In China entertainment is a big part of their lives. Moying Li learned a lot of things at her school including different forms of entertainment. For example she learned to draw, run track and field, and work with animals. Once she moved to the movie studio, she and her friends fished and played by the lake. Moying said, her brother became a “skillful dragonfly catcher. With a homemade net tied to a bamboo pole, he would hide behind a tall tree, like a hunter waiting for his prey, then spring put when a dragonfly landed” (67).Foot Binding:In Lao Lao's time mostly ever women had to get their feet binded. The Chinese Culture of foot binding has been around for over 1000 years. Foot binding requires breaking the bone in a women's feet then wrapping a long bandage around them, so it will stop the growth in the foot. Foot binding is basically suffering for beauty. When Lao Lao was the age that girls got the feet bound her father decided he should have her feet bound, however, he could not watch his daughter suffer so she did not get her feet bound. Since Lao Lao did not get her feet bound she could run and play in the courtyard with the kids unlike most women.
