Lao Lao was a great grandmother to Moying and helped her through a lot of things, this is why Moying's hero is Lao Lao. Lao Lao is very educated and is very diffrent from a lot of women from her time. Lao Lao’s father wanted Lao Lao to be educated which was unusual for girls to have any education. Since she had a large amount of education; she was able to teach other women how to read and write. Lao Lao had the reputation of a smart woman and became known to many as "Mama". Due to her teaching and education, she was elected to represent All-China Women's Federation.
Lao Lao's Tianzu was different in China. Her auntie gave Lao Lao a present and when she opened it she was surprised to find rolls of white linen cloth. She informed Lao Lao, "This will hurt, but after a while the pain will go away'" (25). Her auntie began to fold Lao Lao’s toes under her feet hard and was wrapping the cloth; it hurt so bad Lao Lao ran outside. Zu Ye could not tolerate watching his daughter go through that much pain so Lao Lao never had bound feet. People reacted to her tianzu in a surprisingly manner, Lao Lao was able to run around with the kids. Her father had a lot of trouble finding her a husband because of her feet.

Lao Ye was half paralyzed in the war between the Nationalist and Communist and she would have to help him get dressed and help him do basic everyday things. Her family eventually went in debt but she made sure her family remained in school. Lao Lao was the one responsible for keeping her family together.
Moying lives with Lao Lao and feels safe and secure with her. Lao Lao was Moying’s surrogate mother. She was the one who would comfort her and protect her, and Moying always felt safe in her arms. Even with the lack of money Lao Lao made sure Moying and her brother Di Di had enough food to eat, even if it meant killing the animals she loved so much. Lao Lao stood up to the Red Guards who barged into her house. The soldiers said “What have you done to the poster? How dare you destroy it” (63) Lao Lao would not let them bother her. Moying knows that her grandmother does so much for her and is really grateful for her.
Culture was very diffrent from Lao Lao's time to Moying's time. Moying Li’s culture was stricter that Lao Lao’s because Moying Li's was influenced by Chairman Mao. Not many people in Moying’s culture had bound feet and most were educated unlike Lao Lao’s culture. Chairman Mao said that the only English book to be read is Mao’s Little Red Book. Also in Lao Lao’s culture there was gifts, fireworks, and lots of food during the new year, but in Moying’s it was a minimum. The love for their culture and education was the only similarities between their cultures.
